Between April 27 and May 12, 2026, significant environmental events took place across all provinces of Turkmenistan — training workshops dedicated to updating the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. These workshops represent a strategic step toward protecting and sustainably developing the country's natural resources.
The events were organized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan with the participation of international partners:
- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP);
- Global Environment Facility (GEF).
During the workshops, scientists, experts, and public representatives discussed the priority areas of the country's environmental policy:
- 7th National Report: Details of the report being prepared in accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity were reviewed.
- Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework: Adapting international global environmental goals to Turkmenistan’s national conditions.
- Goals for 2026–2030: Defining specific tasks for protecting the country's flora and fauna over the next five years.
Valuable proposals were gathered from regional specialists and local scientists during the meetings held in the provinces. These proposals will form the foundation of the new strategy under preparation. The new document will enable:
- More effective protection of the country's ecosystems;
- Sustainable and careful use of natural resources;
- Alignment of environmental activities with international standards.
The implementation of this strategy will be of great importance in maintaining Turkmenistan's natural ecosystem sustainably for future generations.
