U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed the possibility of paying $5,000 to adult citizens of the country if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress following the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump made the statement on September 9 while speaking at the Republican Party’s national convention in Dallas. According to him, the payments could be financed through revenues generated by the economic successes of the United States.

The U.S. president called the proposed payment “Trump dividends.” He also noted that citizens would be required to spend the funds within the country.

The U.S. congressional midterm elections will be held on November 3. The elections will determine new representatives for 33 of the 100 seats in the Senate, as well as all 435 seats in the House of Representatives.

Trump’s proposal has so far been put forward as a political statement. Its implementation would require resolving the relevant economic and legislative issues.
