
Mergen Kepbanov, Director of the project office of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in Turkmenistan, held a meeting on Monday with Ashyrmyrat Muhamedov, Director of the "Amu Darya" Basin Water Organization. The parties discussed cooperation in the sustainable management of Amu Darya water resources. This was reported by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia.
The meeting was held as part of the preparation of a new regional program by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Green Climate Fund titled "Sustainable Landscapes and Climate-Resilient Livelihoods in Central Asia: A Transboundary Approach to Combat Climate Change."
The parties also discussed the prospects of cooperation within the developing project, including climate change adaptation and interstate coordination issues within the Amu Darya basin.
During the meeting, information was provided on the activities of the "Amu Darya" Basin Water Organization, which is the interstate body responsible for managing the water resources of the Amu Darya.
The main tasks of the "Amu Darya" Basin Water Organization include the distribution of water resources, monitoring water withdrawal limits, managing river flow, monitoring water use, seasonal forecasting, and coordinating measures during periods of water scarcity.
Following the meeting, the parties confirmed their readiness to continue cooperation on the preparation and implementation of the future regional project.
