With the aim of expanding its electricity export capabilities, Turkmenistan is exploring avenues to participate in an international project to lay a high-voltage electrical cable across the bottom of the Caspian Sea. This initiative will mark a new strategic phase in diversifying the country's energy diplomacy and export routes.
According to a statement made to the "Report" agency within the framework of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) by Abdulla Jelilov, a senior specialist of the Foreign Economic Relations and Export Department of the "Turkmenenergo" State Power Corporation, the construction of a modern, combined-cycle gas and steam power plant with a capacity of 1,574 MW is currently underway at a rapid pace in the city of Turkmenbashi. In the future, this massive facility will serve as the primary production source for the trans-Caspian export route.
"We are thoroughly studying the project of laying an energy cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea. After the project is fully implemented, we aim to transmit the capacity of the new power plant being built in the Balkan region through the subsea Caspian cable first to Azerbaijan, and from there to other regional and European countries," the state corporation representative emphasized.
As noted in the report, the parties demonstrate great interest in implementing this project, and this matter is regularly discussed during the meetings of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
The project promises high economic benefits not only for Turkmenistan but also for all participating states in the region. In this direction, the Republic of Azerbaijan acts as the most crucial and stable transit country for the reliable transportation of Turkmen electricity toward the west.
