
A high-level meeting was held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres. As reported on the official website of the foreign ministry of Turkmenistan, the meeting discussed the priority areas for further strengthening the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the UN, as well as important issues of global and regional levels.
At the beginning of the talks, Rashid Meredov conveyed warm greetings and best wishes to the UN Secretary-General from the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
During the meeting, special attention was paid to the new resolution recently adopted by the UN General Assembly entitled "The role and importance of the policy of neutrality in maintaining and strengthening international peace, security and sustainable development".
The Turkmen side noted that this historic document is a clear proof of the international recognition of the policy of permanent neutrality as the most effective tool for strengthening mutual trust in the world and preventing conflicts. UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that this resolution was adopted very timely, taking into account the current complex global situation, and expressed his deep gratitude to Turkmenistan for its peace-loving initiatives and global leadership in this direction.
One of the most remarkable parts of the negotiations was the discussion of Turkmenistan's initiative to establish the International University of Peace and Neutrality. The parties unanimously confirmed that the opening of such a higher education institution under the auspices of the UN would provide a strong impetus to the dissemination of neutrality values among the younger generation, mutual respect, and the strengthening of global dialogue.
Turkmenistan's constructive proposals for ensuring peace and security were re-stated during the meeting. In particular, the following initiatives put forward by official Ashgabat were highly praised:
In addition, the interlocutors highly appreciated the effective work carried out by the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia and noted the need to strengthen cooperation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At the end of the meeting, the sides reaffirmed their full readiness to raise the strategic partnership, which serves the interests of all mankind, to new heights.
