Austria's Green Lake: A Natural Wonder that Changes Its Face Twice a Year
There are more than 304 million lakes in the world, but perhaps none is as astonishing as Green Lake (Grüner See) in the Styria region of Austria. Hidden in the heart of the Alps, this unique place demonstrates the magical power of nature through its seasonal transformation.
With the arrival of spring, the snow on the peaks of the Alps begins to melt. Crystal-clear water filters down from the mountain ridges, filling the park in the valley. As a result, an ordinary recreation area turns into a magnificent lake up to 12 meters deep.
During this time, extraordinary sights can be seen underwater:
- Underwater Benches: The benches where people usually rest remain submerged.
- Green Grass and Flowers: The lake gets its name from the emerald green color given to the clear water by the lush grass and plants remaining beneath the surface.
- Expansion of Area: The 2,000-square-meter park expands to nearly 4,000 square meters as a result of the "flooding."
By the end of summer, the water begins to recede gradually. In autumn, the lake turns back into a regular park, making hiking trails, stairs, and bridges visible again for tourists. In the winter frost, the remaining shallow water (1-2 meters) freezes, creating an ice field.
Every year, thousands of photographers and divers come here from all over the world. Swimming among underwater trees, benches, and paths feels like entering another world. This unique play of nature makes Green Lake one of the most attractive corners of the globe.
