The Central Asian countries and the Russian Federation have agreed to establish a joint working group on the energy system. This decision was made on January 22, 2026, in Moscow following expert consultations in the “Central Asia – Russia” format.
The agreement envisions creating a working group at the level of deputy ministers with the participation of relevant energy authorities. Representatives of the respective energy agencies of Turkmenistan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan will be part of the new working group, according to the Russian Ministry of Energy.
The working group will operate in a six-party format and will focus on cooperation issues in the fuel and energy sector.
It will serve as an effective tool for systematically implementing agreements approved at a high level and will ensure the coordination of joint projects in the energy field.
During the meeting, the parties also reviewed cooperation issues related to the implementation of a joint action plan for 2025–2027. This plan was approved following the second “Central Asia – Russia” summit held in Dushanbe and incorporates initiatives proposed by the heads of the regional states.
The first summit with the participation of the heads of Central Asian countries and the Russian Federation was held on October 14, 2022, in Astana, Kazakhstan.
