In India's capital, Delhi, a new policy aimed at expanding the use of electric vehicles to improve the ecological situation and reduce air pollution is being implemented.

According to the new program, which came into effect on July 1, 2026, the majority of new vehicles registered in the city must be powered by electricity. Valued at 1.5 billion US dollars, this project is considered one of the largest initiatives in India's electric vehicle sector.

As part of the program, government subsidies and various benefits are provided to citizens purchasing electric vehicles. Cash incentives are also offered to those who scrap their old gasoline-powered cars.

The new policy primarily focuses on two-wheelers and three-wheelers, which account for approximately 70% of the vehicles in the city. According to the document, starting from 2027, all newly registered three-wheelers and light commercial vehicles, and starting from 2028, two-wheelers must be exclusively electric.

According to experts, this initiative will help vehicle manufacturers and consumers accelerate the transition to eco-friendly transportation.

Currently, out of the 8.7 million registered vehicles in Delhi, approximately 5% are electric vehicles. Nevertheless, their number has been steadily increasing in recent years.

At the same time, city authorities are carrying out large-scale work to increase the number of charging stations for electric vehicles and develop the corresponding infrastructure.
