As part of the second phase of its administrative-territorial reform, Kyrgyzstan plans to abolish its regions and districts and replace them with 20 aimaks (administrative districts). The announcement was made by Elchibek Zhantayev, director of the country’s State Agency for Local Self-Government Affairs.

According to the Kabar.kg news agency, the reform is expected to bring significant changes to the country’s administrative structure. The number of aimaks is expected to exceed 20.

Kyrgyzstan launched its administrative-territorial reform in 2023. During the first phase, the boundaries of several districts were changed, and a number of settlements were incorporated into cities.

At present, the country has more than 40 districts, seven regions and 33 cities. The planned changes are aimed at improving the local governance system.
