New drug against hard-to-treat cancers: "Amivantamab" passes trials successfully
In the United Kingdom, a new and promising cancer treatment, "Amivantamab" (developed by Johnson & Johnson), has successfully passed clinical trials. This drug is considered a major breakthrough for patients suffering from severe forms of head and neck cancer that do not respond to standard treatments, such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
The trials involved 102 patients from 11 countries. The study selected patients with more aggressive and difficult-to-treat cancer types not associated with HPV (Human Papillomavirus). The results astonished doctors:
- Complete and partial response: 43 participants showed positive improvements, with tumors shrinking or disappearing entirely.
- Complete remission: In 15 patients, the cancerous tumors vanished completely.
- Partial remission: In 28 patients, the size of the tumors decreased significantly.
Doctors began observing the first positive results just weeks after the injections commenced.
"Amivantamab" offers several advantages:
- Triple-action mechanism: The drug inhibits the growth of cancer cells, strips them of their defense mechanisms against treatment, and assists the body’s immune system in fighting the disease.
- Convenient administration: The drug is administered as a subcutaneous injection rather than intravenously. Given once every three weeks, this injection saves patients from having to lie under intravenous drips for hours.
Experts describe these results as a true "breakthrough" in medicine. While options for patients who failed standard treatment were previously very limited, this drug now represents a new hope for thousands of people.
