Polar Phenomenon: Day in Alaska and a 6-Month Night in Antarctica
In Utqiagvik, Alaska—the northernmost point of the USA—a period of "polar day" or "midnight sun" began on May 13, which will last for 84 days. Due to this natural phenomenon caused by the tilt of the Earth's axis, the Sun will not drop below the horizon until August 2, providing light 24 hours a day.
At the same time, a starkly different situation is observed at the Earth's South Pole—Antarctica:
- Antarctica: A 6-month "polar night" is in effect, lasting from March 21 to September 21.
- Scientific Stations: At the "Amundsen-Scott" (USA) and "Vostok" (Russia) stations, there is currently total darkness, and temperatures drop below -70 °C.
