With the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan (Oraza), a unique tradition — "yaremezan" — resounds again in Turkmen cities and villages. Children go around neighboring houses in groups, informing people about the arrival of the month of fasting and reciting ancient verses. One of these verses goes as follows:
There is a Moon high above, With edges like a crimson bow, On the Prophet's spread (sachak) There is a share kept for us. Ya Ramadan!
Children are the first to take to the streets and visit neighboring houses — this is a characteristic of the Oraza celebration unique to the Turkmen people. This tradition, carefully preserved since ancient times and passed down from generation to generation, is a wonderful example of folk creativity.
Every Muslim welcomes the holy month of Oraza with good intentions and pure wishes. During these days, the human spirit, soul, and body are purified. Fasting helps in developing qualities such as supporting the weak, helping those in need, forgiving, and being patient.
In this generous month, Muslims fast, give alms (sadaka), pay zakat and fitra, and set tables for their neighbors and relatives, inviting them to iftar (fast-breaking meal). According to tradition, the holy month of Oraza becomes a period of unity, compassion, and spiritual renewal for the entire Turkmen society.
