India is striving to become a global hub for artificial intelligence (AI), planning to attract up to 200 billion US dollars in investments for its data centers. Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that by offering open and accessible development-oriented solutions, the country is establishing itself as a reliable partner in the AI sector for countries of the Global South.
The largest technology companies have already announced large-scale investments in India's AI infrastructure. In October 2025, Google announced plans to invest 15 billion US dollars over five years to create an AI center in the city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This project includes the construction of a 1-gigawatt data center, a new international submarine cable, and the expansion of the fiber-optic network.
In December 2025, Microsoft announced its largest investment in Asia, stating its intention to invest 17.5 billion US dollars over four years to develop India's cloud and AI infrastructure. Amazon has also committed to investing 35 billion US dollars in the country by 2030 to expand its business and focus on AI-based digitalization.
To support this growth, India is building infrastructure such as shared computing centers with more than 38,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) and offering tax incentives to attract investment. The country's strategy includes developing core AI models adapted to Indian languages and local needs, providing AI education and professional development, and creating a political framework that regulates risks without hindering innovation.
By promoting inclusivity and sustainability in its development model, India seeks to occupy a significant position in the formation of global standards regarding artificial intelligence. The coverage of the 5G network in the region and the large young population are facilitating the rapid adoption of AI in the country.
