World Population Is Growing, but Growth Rate Is Slowing

Currently, the world population continues to increase. However, in recent years, the pace of population growth has gradually slowed. According to international demographic organizations, in 2024–2025, birth and death rates remain high, but the gap between them has begun to narrow.

At the beginning of 2024, the global population was approximately 8.09 billion. By the beginning of 2025, this number rose to around 8.25 billion. Thus, over the course of one year, the world population increased by more than 70 Turkmenistanmillion people.

Experts note that this growth is somewhat slower compared to previous decades.

According to 2024 data, on average worldwide:

  • about 361 thousand people are born daily;

  • this corresponds to more than 132 million births annually.

In 2025, the birth rate remains nearly the same, with an average of 362–363 thousand births per day worldwide.

Experts emphasize that while birth rates are stabilizing globally, they are decreasing in most developed countries. The main population growth occurs in African and South Asian countries.

In 2024, on average:

  • around 170 thousand people died daily;

  • this resulted in over 62 million deaths annually.

In 2025, this figure slightly increased, with approximately 172–173 thousand deaths per day.

The rise in mortality is linked to population aging, an increase in the number of elderly people, and the overall population growth.

The difference between births and deaths remains positive:

  • in 2024 — around 191 thousand people per day;

  • in 2025 — about 189–190 thousand people per day.

However, the daily rate of natural population growth continues to decline.

International experts highlight several key demographic trends:

  • slowing world population growth;

  • declining birth rates in Europe, East Asia, and North America;

  • continued rapid population growth in African countries;

  • rising median age of the global population.

According to experts, these trends will determine the direction of global population development in the coming years.

Thus, the world population continues to grow, but the slowdown in demographic growth is clearly noticeable. Although birth rates are still higher than death rates, the gap between them is gradually narrowing. This could lead to stabilization of global population in the future.
