Cucumber Planting Methods and Timing
Cucumber is one of the most popular and widely grown vegetables, especially in spring and summer. To achieve high yields, proper planting time and technique are essential.

Planting Time
Planting time depends on the method, climate, and soil temperature. In Turkmenistan, cucumbers are usually planted in two seasons:
-
Spring Planting:
From late March to early April. Soil temperature should be above +15°C. -
Summer Planting (Second Crop):
From mid-June to early July. Due to high temperatures, irrigation is especially important.
Planting Methods
1. Direct Seeding
Seeds are planted directly into the field.
-
Row spacing: 60–70 cm between rows, 20–30 cm within the row.
-
Seeds per hole: 2–3 seeds.
-
Depth: 2–3 cm.
This method is suitable for large-scale farming.
2. Transplanting Seedlings
Seedlings are grown in trays or greenhouses and later transplanted.
-
Preparation: Start 20–25 days before field planting.
-
Transplant: When seedlings have 3–4 leaves.
-
Advantage: Earlier harvest and faster growth.
Ideal for small gardens or early production.
Soil Preparation
Light, fertile, well-drained soil is best. Improve soil by:
-
Rotating crops (e.g., after tomatoes or wheat).
-
Adding organic fertilizer (manure or compost).
-
Plowing 20–25 cm deep before planting.
Irrigation and Care
-
Regular watering is crucial, especially before flowering and during fruiting.
-
Weeding and loosening the soil enhance growth.
-
Use nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers as needed.
Harvesting
-
First harvest: 40–60 days after planting.
-
Harvest cucumbers at 10–15 cm in length to maintain taste and quality.
Cucumbers thrive with timely planting, consistent irrigation, and care. The sunny climate and fertile soil of Turkmenistan offer perfect conditions for growing cucumbers.
