Aging cells, which stop dividing, may play a key role in the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. This conclusion was reached by an international team of scientists. The study was published in the Journal of Internal Medicine (JIM).

These senescent cells accumulate in tissues involved in metabolism and release substances that cause inflammation and fibrosis. This disrupts the normal function of organs and contributes to metabolic disorders.

Based on these findings, scientists are developing a new therapeutic direction — senotherapy, which includes: senolytics, which eliminate aging cells; senomorphics, which suppress harmful factors released by them; and senosensitizers, which make these cells vulnerable to removal.

“By targeting aging cells, senotherapy removes one of the key causes of age-related and obesity-associated metabolic disorders. This opens a new avenue in modern medicine,” explained the lead author, Dr. Allison Palmer from the Mayo Clinic.

Researchers believe that such treatments may not only cure but also prevent the development of age-related metabolic diseases.
