Ogurjaly Island – A Corner of Nature

Ogurjaly Island is located 45 kilometers from the city of Turkmenbashi, on the coast of the Caspian Sea. The island is distinguished by its unique nature and rich wildlife. Its total area is about 9,000 hectares, with a length of 40 kilometers and a width of 1.5 to 2 kilometers. The Ogurjaly State Nature Reserve is located on the island, covering an area of 7,000 hectares.

The reserve was established in 1982 as part of the Caspian State Nature Reserve in Turkmenbashi with the goal of breeding saigas. Currently, the population of saigas on the island exceeds 2,000. Each year, part of the saigas is relocated to other reserves.

The natural conditions of Ogurjaly are favorable: the climate is mild in winter and cool in summer. These conditions promote the development of vegetation and wildlife. The island is home to 65 plant species, including astragal, pecek, selin, and reeds. More than 120 species of birds also inhabit the island. In winter, birds from Russia and Kazakhstan migrate here.

The waters around the island host various fish species. In the clean waters, the Caspian dweller can be found, which is one of the two types of freshwater dweller in the world and is known for its small size. The nature of this island, its rich animal and plant world, and the ecological measures taken here confirm the importance of this place as a significant natural reserve.
