Protecting Your Brain from Stroke Through Healthy Eating
Healthy eating plays a key role in preventing stroke and maintaining vascular health. Cardiologist and therapist, Associate Professor at Kazan Federal University, Lenar Kashapov, told Gazeta.Ru that the following six nutrients help protect the brain’s blood vessels: omega-3, B vitamins, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamins C and E.
“It’s important to ensure adequate intake of omega-3, as it strengthens blood vessel walls, lowers triglyceride levels, and has anti-inflammatory effects. B vitamins are crucial for reducing homocysteine levels — an amino acid whose excess increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and thrombosis. Magnesium helps maintain vascular tone and regulate blood pressure. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular events. Antioxidants (vitamins C and E) protect cells from oxidative stress,” the doctor explained.
To get all these nutrients, the doctor recommends following a Mediterranean diet, which includes vegetables, fruits, fish, whole grains, and olive oil.
“It’s best to limit red meat, sugar, and artificial trans fats. If diet alone doesn’t provide enough of these nutrients, consider taking high-quality vitamin supplements from trusted manufacturers — preferably purchased from pharmacies, where storage and transportation conditions are controlled,” the doctor added.
