Turkmen tennis players achieved a remarkable success at the Davis Cup regional tournament, earning the right to compete in Group IV of the Asia/Oceania Zone in 2026. This significant event took place at the courts of the Polytechnic University in Isa Town, where, over the course of a week, 14 teams of Group V of the Asia/Oceania Zone competed for two promotion spots to the higher group.

In the first stage of the tournament, our athletes confidently led Group “C”, winning all singles and doubles matches without a single loss. First, the national team of Brunei was defeated 3:0, followed by victories with the same score over the teams of Bangladesh and Bahrain. Before the decisive match for advancing to the play-offs, the host nation was considered the clear favorite thanks to strong support from the local fans. However, the Turkmen tennis players did not agree with such expectations and left no chance for their strong opponents.

In the decisive play-off match for promotion, our team faced the national team of Guam, which had previously defeated Myanmar and Mongolia with a score of 2:1 and finished first in Group “B”.

Before the crucial match, experts were cautious in their predictions. On one hand, Turkmenistan’s confident performance throughout the tournament; on the other hand, the unfavorable head-to-head statistics. In 2018, Guam had defeated Turkmenistan twice — 3:0 at the tournament in Oman and 2:1 at the tournament in Türkiye in 2023. Turkmenistan had only one victory — a 3:0 win at the 2019 tournament in Jordan.

Despite the difficult predictions, the play-off match turned out to be very easy for our team, although the first set, lost with a large margin, caused some concern. But in the next two sets, Selim Chagylov regained control and, in a match lasting 1 hour and 31 minutes, confidently defeated Junhyeok Son with a score of 1:6, 6:3, 6:1. In the second singles match, Allanur Dayanjov needed only 51 minutes to beat Bryce Manalo 6:1, 6:0, securing Turkmenistan’s victory ahead of schedule. In the doubles match, Meýlis Orazmuhammedov and Yuriy Rogusskiy defeated Daniel Llareñas and Emil Kristian Penafiel in 1 hour and 5 minutes — 2:6, 6:2, 10:5, setting the final score at 3:0 in favor of Turkmenistan.

The national team of Turkmenistan at the Davis Cup included: Yuriy Rogusskiy, Meýlis Orazmuhammedov, Selim Chagylov, Allanur Dayanjov, and Aly Geldiyev. Team captain — Miraly Gasanov. Coach — Gurbanberdi Gurbanberdiyev. Head of delegation — Chairman of the Tennis Federation of Turkmenistan, Eziz Dowletov.

The second team to earn promotion to Group IV of the Asia/Oceania Zone was the team of the Northern Mariana Islands, which defeated the Maldives in the other play-off match.

The year 2025 — the International Year of Peace and Trust, declared by Turkmenistan and supported by a UN General Assembly resolution — has been extremely successful for Turkmen tennis. Thus, at the Central Asian Championship for girls under 12 held in Fergana, the Turkmen team defeated Uzbekistan for the first time and earned the right to participate in the U12 Asia Team Championship in Singapore.

In addition, the women’s team of Turkmenistan took second place at the regional Billie Jean King Cup (“Group III Asia/Oceania”) held in Colombo (Sri Lanka). The men’s team participated for the first time in the prestigious ITF Master’s World Team Championship in Manavgat (Türkiye), entering the top eight teams in the world — a historic achievement for Turkmen tennis.

And now, the men’s national team of Turkmenistan has achieved yet another brilliant success at the Davis Cup regional tournament, on the eve of another significant event — the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s Neutrality.
