Biodegradable plastic

Researchers from Japan’s RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science, in collaboration with the University of Tokyo, have developed an innovative biodegradable plastic that dissolves in seawater within a few hours. Unlike traditional plastics, which take centuries to decompose, this new material breaks down quickly without leaving harmful residues. It is made from food-safe components, including natural substances such as sugars and amino acids, making it non-toxic and safe for various applications. In addition to its marine benefits, the plastic also improves soil health by decomposing within days and releasing nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen that enrich the soil.
