Central Asian Champions on Cambodian Turf: A Historic Final Between FC Arkadag and Svay Rieng

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — The reigning champions of Turkmenistan, FC Arkadag, are set to face local side Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng today in the AFC Challenge League final, to be held at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. This landmark event marks the first time a Central Asian club has arrived in Cambodia to play in an official international match. Interest in the final has been immense — over 53,000 tickets were sold out in advance.
FC Arkadag landed at Phnom Penh International Airport on Tuesday, May 7, around midday. Under the leadership of head coach Dovletmyrat Annayev, the club made history as the first Central Asian team to play an official match on Cambodian soil. Competing in Turkmenistan’s top-tier league, the Yokary Liga, Arkadag claimed the championship in their debut season with an impressive 83–17 goal difference. This season, the team continues its undefeated streak, having won their first five matches and currently sitting third in the league standings behind Ahal and Altyn Asyr.
Svay Rieng — Ready for a Historic Final
Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng’s head coach, Spaniard Pep Munoz, has voiced his goal to turn the final into “a true football festival for the people of Cambodia.” His words struck a chord with local fans. The 53,000-seat stadium is expected to host the most attended football match in Cambodian history.
