High-Speed Optical Chip for ChatGPT

Artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT are known for their high energy consumption. To address this issue, a new optical chip has been developed by the Center for Optics, Photonics, and Lasers (COPL). This chip is capable of transmitting large volumes of data at high speed while providing significant energy efficiency.

The breakthrough, published in Nature Photonics, is based on using the power of light to transmit information. Unlike traditional systems, the new chip utilizes not only the intensity of light but also the phase shift of light beams. This adds a new dimension to the signal and enables data transmission speeds to increase from 56 gigabits per second to 1 terabit per second — an 18-fold improvement.

The new chip promises to bring fundamental changes to AI data centers, which currently occupy large spaces and consume vast amounts of energy.
