Risks of Neck Massage: Doctors Warn About Possible Stroke
Neurologist Dmitry Khutorov from Lahta Clinic told Gazeta.Ru that neck massage using traction techniques (a method in which the spine is pulled by hand, common in modern manual therapy) can, in some cases, trigger a stroke.
“Massage is generally considered safe and not a risk factor for stroke. However, there are exceptions. Rough traction techniques used during neck massage — especially in manual therapy — may lead to arterial wall dissection of the carotid or vertebral arteries. This dissection can then result in a stroke,” the doctor explained.
In addition, Khutorov noted that the risk of such vascular dissection is higher in individuals with connective tissue dysplasia, a condition often marked by joint hypermobility. A family history of such conditions can also increase the risk.
“If after a massage involving intense manual manipulation you feel head or neck pain, or notice a pulsating noise in your ears, it's important to pay attention to these symptoms. In such cases, it's best to seek medical attention promptly to prevent serious complications,” he advised.
