EatingWell: Almonds and cashews may lower heart disease risk by 17%

Researchers from the Loma Linda University School of Public Health (USA) have found that regular nut consumption reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death, EatingWell reports.

The study was based on data from the Adventist Health Study 2 project, which involved more than 80,000 adult volunteers from the United States and Canada.

It turned out that participants who regularly ate nuts had a 14% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those who rarely or never ate them. The risk of death from ischemic heart disease in this group was 19% lower.

According to the scientists, the greatest benefits come from almonds, cashews, and walnuts. Regular consumption of these nuts was associated with a 17% reduction in cardiovascular mortality and a 27% reduction in ischemic heart disease deaths.

The researchers noted that nuts are rich in unsaturated fats, plant protein, and fiber. They also contain vitamins E and B, as well as minerals that strengthen blood vessels and help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

Additionally, nuts support digestive health and strengthen the immune system. Previous studies have shown that gut bacteria and their metabolites can modulate the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body.
