Tokayev Emphasized the Importance of Protecting the Aral and Caspian Ecosystems
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at the international forum “Peace and Trust” held in Ashgabat, drew attention to issues of transboundary water resource management as well as the ecological condition of the Aral Sea and the Caspian Sea.
According to the official press service of the President of Kazakhstan, Tokayev emphasized that water security has become a strategic priority for Kazakhstan and the entire region.
He proposed enhancing the effectiveness of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and developing an interstate program to prevent the degradation of the Caspian Sea ecosystem.
The President of Kazakhstan also put forward an initiative to establish an International Water Organization that could integrate existing UN mandates and analytical mechanisms in this field. He noted that this proposal fully aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
A Regional Environmental Summit is scheduled to be held in Astana in April next year, where Kazakhstan plans to discuss the establishment of the International Water Organization.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed confidence that the Ashgabat forum would strengthen cooperation among countries and give new momentum to international efforts aimed at building a fair world order based on trust.
