Bicycle Festival in Lebap: A Path to Health and Sustainable Development
Every year on June 3, World Bicycle Day is celebrated — not merely a sports holiday, but a powerful symbol of sustainable development, environmental consciousness, and public health. This holiday was established at the initiative of Turkmenistan and has gained worldwide recognition.

On April 12, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly officially declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day. The resolution was prepared by Turkmenistan and widely supported by the international community. It reflects our country’s consistent commitment to global peace, sustainable development, and a healthy lifestyle.
The bicycle is more than just a mode of transport — it’s a convenient tool for strengthening health, improving quality of life, and protecting the environment. That’s why the recognition of this date at the UN level is an important milestone toward building a clean and healthy society.
Cycling is popular worldwide among people of all ages and is an accessible form of physical activity. It also plays a vital role in urban transport systems.
Under the leadership of our respected President, cycling is actively promoted in Turkmenistan. Youth are encouraged to engage in sports, and international cooperation in this field is growing stronger. The successes of Turkmen athletes in prestigious international competitions prove the effectiveness of state policy.
Cycling is also highly valued in the Lebap region. In Turkmenabat’s 5th sports school, young people receive specialized training in cycling. Several of the school’s athletes are now members of the national team and compete successfully at both national and international levels.
We must also mention the achievements of Batyr Abdyllaýew from Danew and Rozygeldi Dowletow from Halach, who have conducted several long-distance cycling tours across the country. Their efforts contribute to the promotion of sports, tourism, and patriotism among the youth.
Various events — competitions, exhibitions, conferences, and awareness campaigns — are held around the world in honor of World Bicycle Day. Turkmenistan’s active participation in these events highlights its high international standing.
Established by Turkmenistan’s initiative, this holiday is now celebrated globally, demonstrating the country's growing international prestige. World Bicycle Day is a celebration of our health, our community, and our environment. It encourages people to embrace sport, foster ecological awareness, and spread healthy lifestyle values.
