Huawei Expands the Ecosystem of Its HarmonyOS Operating System

Chinese technology giant Huawei announced last Thursday that it will unveil its first line of personal computers (PCs) running on the HarmonyOS operating system on May 19. This move marks a significant milestone in the substantial expansion of the HarmonyOS ecosystem. Currently, this system integrates smartphones and tablets, ensuring their seamless operation. By launching personal computers equipped with the first domestically developed operating system for the Chinese market, Huawei aims to pose a serious challenge to Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS, which have long dominated the PC market, according to Xinhua.Huawei PCs running HarmonyOS are compatible with over 1,000 external devices. To date, more than 150 specialized applications have been developed for these computers, and they are compatible with over 300 add-ons within the ecosystem. As highlighted by Huawei, the new computers enable seamless connectivity between the brand’s devices: users can control the screens of their phones, tablets, or computers using a single keyboard and mouse, effortlessly switching between devices. Additionally, HarmonyOS incorporates robust security features, including a dedicated encryption chip, secure access mechanisms, and encrypted data exchange protocols.First introduced in August 2019, HarmonyOS (known as Hongmeng in Chinese) is an open-source operating system designed for various devices and use cases. It encompasses smart screens, tablets, wearable devices, and vehicles. According to experts, Huawei will need to intensify its efforts to attract users, as Windows and macOS stand out with their more advanced and richer application ecosystems. Nevertheless, Huawei’s innovative approaches and unique technologies could pave the way for success in this competitive landscape.
