Kelif — A Unique Treasure of Nature
Kelif Specially Protected Nature Reserve

A clear example of the efforts carried out in Turkmenistan to preserve nature, ensure biological diversity, and protect natural resources for future generations is the Kelif Specially Protected Nature Reserve. Established in 1970, the reserve currently covers an area of 103,000 hectares.

The main significance of this reserve lies in providing conditions for birds to nest, winter, and migrate—over 200 species pass through the area. Kelif’s biological diversity is largely enriched by the influence of the Garagum River’s water system. This unique natural setting offers great opportunities for the development of flora and fauna.

Natural Wealth — Diversity of Flora and Fauna
Within the territory of the reserve, 31 species of mammals are found. Mice and foxes are the most commonly encountered animals. In remote areas, forests, and reedbeds, birds such as the francolin and moorhen are known to live freely.

Due to varying climatic conditions across the reserve, the number of predatory animals—such as wolves, jackals, foxes, hyenas, wildcats, and caracals—is increasing year by year. Many of these species are listed in both Turkmenistan’s and international Red Books (endangered species lists).

The water-rich Kelif lakes are home to nearly 40 species of fish. Among them is the sturgeon, which is also listed in Turkmenistan’s Red Book and is protected at the international level.

Botanical Discoveries and Scientific Importance
Kelif’s plant world is a combination of distinct features from various climatic zones. Desert plants such as reeds, tamarisks, saxaul, and camelthorn are widely spread throughout the area. Recent scientific studies have also revealed differences in the seed varieties of the northern and southern parts of the reserve. This makes Kelif a valuable source for scientific research and for developing strategies to combat desertification.

The nature of Turkmenistan is not only a national treasure of the people but also holds significant international importance. Special reserves like Kelif highlight the country’s natural beauty, biological richness, and ecological balance.
