Jio Platforms Turns India’s TVs into Computers

Indian technology company Jio Platforms, part of the Reliance Industries conglomerate, has launched a virtual personal computer (PC) service for users of its TV set-top boxes. This is part of Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani’s broader vision to transform millions of Indian televisions into fully functional computers.
Currently, JioPC is being offered in a trial phase. Interested users can apply via the company’s website to gain access to a virtual desktop. To use the service, one simply needs to connect a standard keyboard and mouse to the television.
While JioPC unlocks new possibilities, it does have some limitations: for example, it does not support external peripherals like cameras or printers. The system uses LibreOffice for document editing, while Microsoft Office applications are accessible via a web browser. The rollout of JioPC is expected to further expand Jio Platforms’ already massive user base of over 488 million people.
