Musk Reveals Plan to Control Climate Using Satellites
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk shared on platform X his plan to save humanity from a climate catastrophe.
“A large constellation of AI-powered satellites running on solar energy could prevent global warming by making small adjustments to the amount of sunlight reaching Earth,” Musk wrote.
Currently, SpaceX operates a network of nearly 9,000 Starlink satellites. They don’t block the Sun yet but do interfere with astronomers’ observations of deep space.
When a follower asked whether the satellites could make precise adjustments to the amount of solar energy reaching Earth without destabilizing the climate — and without sparking potential conflicts over control of such a powerful global mechanism — Musk simply replied: “Yes.”
“Only minor adjustments would be needed to prevent global warming — or global cooling, for that matter,” he added.
The idea of blocking sunlight to mitigate climate change — known as solar geoengineering — is highly controversial in the scientific community. Most experts agree it’s theoretically possible but extremely risky. The Earth’s climate is a vast and complex system, and any attempt to alter the amount of sunlight it receives is almost certain to have unintended consequences.
