OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has signed an agreement with chipmaker AMD — just weeks after announcing a $100 billion deal with Nvidia, the largest supplier of graphics processors for artificial intelligence.

This new deal signals OpenAI’s intent to diversify its hardware supply and reduce its dependence on Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI hardware market.

OpenAI will begin using AMD chips in the second half of 2026.

The new chips will be deployed in separate data centers, distinct from previously announced facilities in Texas, New Mexico, Ohio, and an undisclosed state in the U.S. Midwest.

AMD is one of several companies actively seeking to gain market share in AI infrastructure, where Nvidia still holds a dominant position.

The AI chip market is growing rapidly, with continuing demand for computing power to run models like ChatGPT.

In its effort to ensure scalability of both its models and infrastructure, OpenAI is clearly adopting a multi-supplier strategy.

At the same time, AMD gets a chance to strengthen its position in a highly competitive market and become a viable alternative to Nvidia in the AI space.

The deal with AMD highlights how fast AI technologies are evolving — and how critically important computational infrastructure has become for companies operating in this space. OpenAI, moving proactively, is strengthening its technological independence and preparing for the next phase of scaling.
