Egypt has completed the construction of the Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza pyramids. This museum is considered the largest in the world dedicated to a single civilization, becoming a major center of global cultural heritage.

History and Construction

The project was initiated in 1992 by President Hosni Mubarak. A site about two kilometers from the pyramids was allocated. In 2003, the Irish architecture firm Heneghan Peng Architects won the international design competition, and the engineering was carried out by the British companies Arup and Buro Happold.

Construction began in 2012. The opening was repeatedly delayed due to political and economic challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic. A partial opening occurred in 2024, with full public access planned for November 1, 2025.

Museum Features

The total area of the building is 81,000 m², with an exhibition space of 50,000 m². The museum houses over 100,000 artifacts from the pharaonic era, many of which have never been publicly displayed before.

Conclusion

The Grand Egyptian Museum merges history with modernity, establishing itself as one of the world’s key centers of culture and tourism.
