The World’s Tallest Pumped-Storage Hydropower Plant Opened in China
In the economically developed eastern region of China, in Jiangsu Province, engineers have commissioned the tallest pumped-storage hydropower plant in the world. The new plant is located in the city of Juyong and was built under the supervision of a subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China.
Plant Features
-
Installed capacity: 1.35 million kilowatts
-
Annual energy generation at full load: 1.35 billion kilowatt-hours
-
Height of the upper reservoir dam: 182.3 meters — roughly equivalent to a 60-story building
-
Water storage capacity: 17.07 million cubic meters
These specifications make it the tallest pumped-storage hydropower plant in the world.
Need and Energy Situation
Last year, electricity demand in Jiangsu Province broke historical records several times, reaching 156 million kilowatts at peak. At the same time, the installed capacity of renewable energy is rapidly growing, creating a need for pumped-storage plants to balance fluctuations caused by variable wind and solar generation and ensure stable electricity supply during peak periods.
Energy Development
Since 2021, the State Grid Corporation of China has commissioned 78 pumped-storage units with a total capacity exceeding 44 million kilowatts, strengthening the country’s energy stability.
